Ask Yourself These 3 Questions:

Do you dread Monday mornings and going to a job you don't really like?

Have you been thinking about freelancing but afraid to move forward?

Would you like to learn from someone who made a successful
transition from the corporate world to the freelance world?

I'll spare you the sales hype.

This book is simply the story of how I went from working for one of the most famous companies in the world, to becoming a freelance marketing communications writer, and then a successful direct market graphic designer.

Stick Figure Book CoverThe book is called, I Still Can't Draw Good Stick Figures. I explain in the book how I came up with the title and why it's significant. (You may find my story in that regard is the same as yours.)  And for the record, I didn't draw the stick figures on the cover. I explain that, too. But neither of those two facts are important at the moment.

I have two main goals with this book:

1. I want to inspire you to keep pushing to achieve your freelance goals.

2. I want you to get some ideas that you might be able to adapt to reach your goals, or at the very least see some things you should avoid.

The fact is, no one can 100% duplicate what someone else did to achieve a goal that involves significant changes to one's life and attitude. But you can learn from my mistakes and successes. Hopefully, the most important thing you’ll take away is that there is always a way if you’re committed to finding it.

I’ve broken down the book into sections that will give you a rough timeline of how things happened. So we’ll all on the same page - pardon the pun - I’m starting the story just prior to starting as a freelance writer, which then led to becoming a freelance designer. I think it will be helpful for you to know what was going through my mind as I jumped from the corporate world to the freelance world. Also, many of the mistakes I made were during my freelance writing time, so it’s important I share those stories. That makes up about half the book while my design experiences make up the other half.

Here are some of the things I talk about over the book's 55+ pages:

  • How a failed design project turned into a job that is responsible for almost all the work I get.

  • My worst project and how it could have been avoided.

  • Whether spec work is worthwhile.

  • Why my first writing client put me on a path not to make great money.

  • Why you need to be very particular about who you listen to as you build your business.

  • The question from a potential client that changed the course of my career.

  • All the marketing attempts that failed and what, ultimately, became my best marketing vehicle.

The most important thing I'm going to share with you is something that changed my business around in a big way. It was a way to know how to target the right clients. For me, this was incredible advice.

This is not a how-to book or step-by-step book. I'm not going to tell you how to price projects. The book simply allows me to share my successes and mistakes on the way to this point where I now work from home, doing work I love. It's just my story and the lessons I've learned along the way.

If you know me from one of the many forums I used to frequent, you know I'm always happy to share what I know. But as my business has grown, I've had to restrict the amount of time I can spend on forums. (In fact, in the book I explain how something strange happened when I stopped many of the extra-curricular activities I was involved in.) Since I tend to get asked the same questions over and over, it was time to put it into an eBook.

I don't have any problem charging for the book, but I'm not going to rip you off, either. And I'm not going to try to convince you that the price you'll pay is "half-off the normal price."  For now, I'm selling this eBook for only $12. If you were to take me out to lunch and pick my brain, you'd pay more than that unless you were planning on us sharing a Happy Meal at McDonald's. I think that's a fair price if you're serious about jumping into freelance work, especially freelance design. (Most of what I talk about is easily applied to other types of freelance work, too.)

Like I said, I'll spare you the sales hype. You can become a success without reading this book. But I also know from talking to other beginning designers and writers that they want to know how people just like them got started. That's what this book is - just one person's story of how he did it.

Here are some other questions you have to ask yourself: Are you where you want to be right now? If not, why not? Are you afraid to take action? Do you not have the tools you think you need? Are you waiting for something magical to happen to save you? And most important...where will you be one year from now if you continue to do nothing? If you want to hear from someone who got tired of "doing nothing" and took action, this book is for you.

One quick note so I'm totally upfront with you. I wrote this book a few years back and haven't updated it for awhile. It's on my list, but way down on the list. Once I covered the initial hurdles of building my business, there wasn't much to add that you won't already find on my blog free of charge. Everything I wrote is still valid, but obviously there's a gap between when I originally finished the book and right now.

What I've been doing for people who buy the book now is offer to take any of their follow-up questions via e-mail. If there's something you want to know about that I didn't cover, or you're looking for some more curent information about what I'm doing so you can consider applying it to your situation, I'm happy to answer. That's my gift to those of you who are serious and interested enough to read what I have to say.

So, with that in mind...

Once you've placed your order through PayPal, you'll be taken to a download page where you can download the PDF. If you have any problems, you can always e-mail me and I'll help you out.

I do believe this book has something to offer you. I wouldn't have written it otherwise. But you have to make the decision to learn from my mistakes and my successes. I hope you'll do that because working as a freelancer is the most rewarding work I've ever done. Here are some other benefits that I get from freelancing:

No more worrying about how secure my job is.
No more asking permission to take time off for a family activity or vacation.
No more being told how much I can make.
No more commuting.
No more dreading Monday mornings.

I want you to experience that as well if that's your goal. So here's what I know that, hopefully, you will apply in some way to your own life.
